Will it be a kind of ‘Spiritual’ training?
Tribe teachers are known for their spiritual understandings and approach to practice and life. We will be studying positive and powerful yoga teachings and seeing how we can apply them to our practice and into our daily living.

We aim to direct your attention and awareness to the subtleties of your being with teachings that are designed to connect you with your true nature, transcending the physical and merging into 'the oneness' that is our very existence.

Many students come to the training with a purely physical practice and interest in yoga and find their approach completely transformed as they discover that the training is as much a spiritual journey as a practical one with many different yogic disciplines to explore and develop.

At Tribe flexibility and strength are considered interesting and enjoyable side effects of asana practice. However standing on your hands or putting your foot behind your head is not the goal of yoga.  Our understanding and practice of asana is based on a more spiritual approach of self development and growth!

All the yoga practices, meditation, pranayama, kriyas, chanting, asana etc are presented as tools of self development and spiritual growth intended to support  you on a journey of  personal transformation and
spiritual evolution.

How much experience do I need?
We like to think of the training as a yoga journey suitable for anyone who has a keen interest to learn something new about themselves and advance their understanding and current experience of yoga. We encourage everybody to do what they can to the best of their ability......at the end of the day its less about ‘what you do’ and more about ‘how you do’ that transforms an action into yoga!

One of the important things to consider is that the training is very challenging so its necessary that everybody who attends is healthy and physically fit with no serious medical conditions (physical or mental).

We find it difficult to asses the level of practice that people have through the application. Someone  who has been practising everyday for 6 months with an experienced teacher could be at a similar level of practice as someone who has been practice for 3 years a couple of times a week in a gym! So we invite all levels, beginners to advanced to join us.  We hope to bring together people who want to discover something new about themselves and who have an interest to contribute to the growing global yoga community. The training is a chance to set the foundation for a more yogic way of living and Being

Most importantly when assessing somebody’s suitability to join one of our trainings we look for students who have a sincere passion and interest to study yoga in all its aspects..... not just asana!!. The training includes yoga philosophy, pranayama, meditation, chanting and much more

What style of yoga will I be trained to teach? Will I get a recognized certificate?
Your teaching should be a reflection of your own self practice (which we help trainees to develop) so if you are a dedicated Ashtanga yogi you will probably stick to teaching the primary series however many of the trainees like to be more creative and individual in their practice and this is evident in how and what they teach at
the end of the training.

We encourage students to use the modified primary series as the basis for sequencing however  in the later halk of the training you can begin to introduce alternative sequencing and postures.

By the end of t
he training trainees will be able to teach whatever intelligent and sensible sequencing and structuring they want. One of the aims of the training is to give you the skills to teach any style of yoga you personally practice.

During the training there is lots of opportunity for teaching practice and experiementing with your style.

All trainees who successfully complete the training will receive a 200hr yoga teaching certificate. Tribe is registered with The Yoga Alliance, The European Yoga Alliance and The Yoga Register.

What will the Asana classes be like?

Asana classes are taught through instructions that are focused on leading the students into a deeper awareness and sensitivity so they can more easily feel and recognise what’s going on inside their bodies ….not just physically! We feel that awareness is the fertile ground for transformation and the real essence of yoga lies in the subtleties of sensations inthe body, breath, and mind.

Tribes approach to teaching asana is one of clear and effective instructions that empowers the students and offers a more beneficial and deeper asana practice.  Based on the dynamic yoga method the instructions you receive to guide you through the form of the asanas will also connect you with the dynamics of the foundation, breath, bandhas and the core.

Moving into and out of postures is through a step by step progression synchronising the body movement's with the breath
. Once in a posture students are guided to create a balance between effort, surrender, stability and comfort whilst exploring the possibility of the body and mind opening and releasing

We use a modified primary series as a basic structuring which means we begin with standing postures (warm up), go on to floor postures, inversions and then a finishing sequence.

Some classes will introduce other sequencing like hip opening, back bending, arm balancing etc so students can learn how to teach new postures and sequencing through practice.

There are no mysore style classes offered on the teacher training courses

I am an experienced practitioner and/or teacher. Is the training suitable for me?
The presentation of the yoga teachings on the Tribe trainings are such that many experienced yoga practitioners and yoga teachers come to study with us and find their practice is completely transformed.

The integration of philosophical and practical teachings that Tribe trainings promote on and off the mat has a positive and beneficial impact on the lives of all who attend the training regardless of previous experience.

Trainings are a great opportunity to study, learn and grow with a group of people who all have a passion for yoga and want to share yoga with the world. Both experienced practitioners and more novice students generally have no problem studying and practicing toegther on each others side.

A lot of what we study on Tribe trainings is often new and exciting for both 'beginner' and 'advanced' students. Even long time teachers have found that attending a Tribe training has given fresh input into the way they teach and that the diversity of the teachers and the knowledge they impart to the trainees is both unique and stimulating.

Will we study Ashtanga? Will there be any mysore classes?
It depends what one understands by Ashtanga. Everybody has different ideas!

The Tribe trainings maintain an emphasis on the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga defined in the yoga sutras
by Patanjali which presents us with a journey of personal growth and spiritual development.

In regards to asana practice our teachers are trained in Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow and this is the flavour of the classes that you will have on any TTC with us.

We base the structuring of our classes on the primary series with a strong emphasis on Vinyasa, ujjayi  and the bandhas however
the training also introduces a variety of other styles of yoga and we modify the primary series adding different sequencing and postures.

As well as vinyasa and ujjayi (trademarks of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga) our asana classes have a lot of instruction directing the students to the foundation, the breath, the bandhas and the core. There is also special focus on spiritual context directing the student’s attention to what they are feeling, to increase awarenesss and sensitivity and to cultivate a sense of honesty, sensitivity, focus and openness.

The Tribe approach which we transmit to the trainees is one of clear and effective instruction that can empower students to a more beneficial and deeper asana practice. Generally we do not offer any mysore style asana sessions on these trainings although there is a weekly self practice class with teachers on hand to give adjustments and advice.

Am I too old? Maybe I am not flexible enough?
We at Tribe feel it's not so important how flexible, strong or energetic a student is. Many of us experience limitations in the form of varying energy levels, flexibility, injuries etc the yoga begins when we can meet those limitations with honesty, openness, focus, sensitivity, generosity and love.

We have varying levels of physical attainment on the training and a broad range of ages. Our oldest student who was also a yoga teacher was 68 and she met all the demands and challenges of the training with no problem.

Yoga as a journey of self discovery and transformation is fertilized by awareness, attitude and authentic application of oneself to practice and in our opinion is not dependant on how far you can go into postures. Being flexible is not a pre-requisite to practice or teach yoga.

For those who do have limitations we encourage them to make the necessary modifications during the training so that they can grow and flourish in their practice. If energy levels are low a student can allow more rests and if the body is inflexible then more modifications or props.

I have an injury, can I still attend?
If you have an injury or physical complaint and are able to modify and adapt the practice then you will still be able to attend the training. Injuries are never a reason to stop practicing and actually can be a great lesson in sensitivity and humility.

How can advanced and beginner students study together on the same training?
It is our experience that many students who have practiced yoga for a long time find the posture practice method (foundation, breath, bandhas and core) a revelation to their practice and feel the training enhances and elevates their practice to new levels.

Students that are not so advanced seem to blossom as they find themselves embracing teachings that are taught in a clear and precise way.

The learning of the teaching skills and the philosophy is applicable to all regardless of how much yoga one has practiced. The training is not about attaining difficult postures... someone who is naturally flexible but a beginner can perform difficult asanas in the same way as any long time practitioner!!!

The training is about discovering and honouring our individualities and learning how to present the teachings in an easily digestible and understandable way.

As a yoga teacher a large percentage of the students that one teaches are beginners so if you consider yourself advanced its helpful to study alongside a mixture of abilities so you become familiar with the varying limitations and difficulties that beginners may experience.

If you want to go on to teach advanced students then basically the main difference in the classes you offer will be the  asana and sequencing (which will come from your own personal practice). The teaching of the fundamentals does not change.

How many students will there be?
The numbers vary according to the location ...in Austria and Spain we have a maximum of 15 students and a minimum of 2 teachers. In India there is a maximum of 28 students and a minimum of 4 teachers. In Uk a maximum of 20 students and a minimum of 2 teachers

You can visit the teachers page of the website to see the teaching teams for all scheduled trainings.

I am not familiar with the Ashtanga asanas can I still attend?
We will be studying a broad range of asanas including postures that are not in the primary series. We hope all trainees will experience the training as an opportunity to broaden their practice and understanding of asana and many other yoga disciplines.

As we introduce the fundamentals (foundation, bandhas, breath and core) to asana practice students begin to recognize that the dynamics of what is going on inside an asana is always the same and it's just the outside shape that changes.  So at the end of the training it will not be so daunting in the future to attempt new and unfamiliar postures with your new found knowledge of the fundamentals that you will learn.

Whilst we do not expect you to necessarily be a regular Ashtanga practitioner we do recommend that you have at least attended some ashtanga classes or if that is not possible you should practice a number of times with a dvd.

What is the difference between trainings held at different locations?
There may be minor differences but mostly all trainings have the same schedule and manual and are facilitated by either Scarlett, Rory, Raquel or Sequoia. The facilitators have all co-taught on Tribe trainings and whilst each teacher brings their own flair, passion and understanding to a training there is a general Tribe school of thought and atmosphere that is adhered to regardless of who is teaching.

There may be additional lectures on trainings according to the guest teachers or speakers that come to share their particular field of expertise. Please check on the teachers page to view the teaching teams as they vary from training to training.

UK offers an ideal retreat senario with a natural and peaceful setting that has few distractions. Situated next to a biodynamic farm and close to the ashdown forest its a great place for going on hikes. The accommodation is of a western standard and the whole venue has a special energy of love, care and unity. Its a short train ride from London so on weekends off you can pop to the capital city and enjoy all that it has to offer.

Austria
offers a relaxed and intimate feeling/atmosphere which some students feel accelerates their learning process and allows them to receive greater individual support. The venue has very little in terms of distractions as it is set in a very peaceful and beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and forests. We find the students feel very grounded and focused at the Austria training.

Rishikesh is an ideal place to study yoga and is renowned for its many spiritual activities and events taking place all year around. For many just being in Rishikesh is truly nourishing for the soul. There’s also the healing and holy waters of the ganga to dip into, beaches to relax on and lush nature of the mountains all around.

Goa seems to have lots of appeal for it’s great beaches and cosmopolitan feel. It is fast becoming a bit of a spiritual Mecca with people from all over the world gathering together to share or learn something from each other.  It is the perfect place to come and spend some quality time studying yoga and many other spiritual practices...such as meditation, tai chi, dance, music, satsang. However students need to be discipline to not get distracted by the pull of the social scene in Goa!

Spain has the bonus of staying at a working organic farm with a 'getting back to nature' feel. The Andalusia Mountains are renowned for their beauty and like in Austria the training will be a small and intimate group. The venue offers us a chance to live in a communal and family like way, sharing living and dining spaces. Although the venue is very much secluded (with a swimming pool!) it is close to a village and days off you can go to the beach at Granada

English is not my first language, can i still attend?
The training materials, all lectures and all classes are taught in English. If English is not your first language you may wish to consider carefully how and if you can cope with the additional challenge of studying in a second language.
You are required to teach and write in English only. Many students who cannot understand English fully may find this frustrating whilst some dont mind and are happy for the opportunity to study English as well as studying yoga....... its really up to you to decide.

As well as being ‘down to earth’ Tribe teachers are known for their spiritual understandings and approach to practice and life. We use ancient yoga teachings and apply them directly to our practice and look at the positive impact they can bring into our daily living.

Flexibility and strength are considered interesting side effects to yoga asana practice but being able to stand on your hands or put your foot behind your head is not yoga! Many students come to the training with a purely physical practice and interest in yoga and find their approach completely transformed as they discover that the training is as much a spiritual journey as a practical one!
